The International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS), first held in 1992 and held bi-annually since 1996, hosts keynotes, symposia, workshops, panels, submitted paper sessions, poster sessions, and demos covering timely and important issues and reporting research findings across the entire field of the learning sciences.  Each conference has had invited keynotes and sessions centered on timely themes. In 2018, the ICLS conference is part of the London Festival of Learning, which has two other conferences co-located and running alongside it – the AIED and the Learning@Scale conferences. The whole Festival of Learning runs from 23 – 30 June in central London.

ICLS is a major international event, organized biennially by ISLS, which gathers people involved in all aspects of the field of the learning sciences, including empirical, conceptual, theoretical, design-based, practitioner and policy perspectives. The conference theme for ICLS 2018 is “Rethinking learning in the digital age: making the Learning Sciences count,”.
Now more than ever, the learning sciences have a key role to play in guiding the commercial development of Educational Technologies to ensure that they are pedagogically sound. The Learning Sciences are replete with foundational theory and methods that can inform the educational use of technology, as well as a significant bank of empirical educational evidence that is essential to the effective development of technologies to support learning. However, with these fast technological developments there is also a growing need for the learning sciences to understand and to align better with the real-world needs, challenges and concerns of educators in different educational and cultural contexts to offer guidance that recognizes and addresses the long-term ambitions for better education as well as the ‘bottom-line’ considerations faced by the practitioners and learners at the front-line.

We encourage papers that build on interdisciplinary research, as well as papers that help to set the programmatic agenda for the future of learning sciences research. In particular, for 2018 we are also looking for papers that illustrate how the learning sciences can impact upon the development of commercial educational technology and papers that crossover the three conferences that compose the festival of learning.

Learning and Teaching is undergoing a long awaited transformation as consumerised smart computing provides an opportunity for educators and developers to take high quality learning to scale across the globe. Now more than ever, the learning sciences have a key role to play in guiding these developments to ensure that they are pedagogically sound. The Learning Sciences are replete with foundational theory and methods that can inform the educational use of technology, as well as a significant bank of empirical educational evidence that is essential to the effective development of technologies to support learning. However, with these fast technological developments there is also a growing need for the learning sciences to understand and to align better with the real-world needs, challenges and concerns of educators in different educational and cultural contexts to offer guidance that recognizes and addresses the long-term ambitions for better education as well as the ‘bottom-line’ considerations faced by the practitioners and learners at the front-line.  This theme will encompass the work of learning sciences across the world and synthesize this work to provide a timely resource for the EdTech community.

Papers, posters and symposia

Full Papers - 6 pages + 2 pages for references. DEADLINE Nov. 17, 2017
Full papers are for mature work, requiring lengthy explanations of the conceptual background, methodology and data and analysis. Full paper submissions should state: (a) the major issue(s) addressed, (b) potential significance of the work, (c) the theoretical and methodological approach(es) pursued, (d) major findings, conclusions, implications, and (e) relevant scholarly references.

Short Papers - 4 pages + 1 page for references DEADLINE Nov. 17, 2017
Short papers are for work that makes significant contributions, but that is still in progress, of smaller scale, or that can be reported briefly. Otherwise, the same criteria apply as listed for full papers above.

Posters - 2 pages+ 1 page for references DEADLINE Nov. 17, 2017
Posters are for work in early stages and for novel and promising ideas. The two-page abstract should identify the aspect of the work that will likely lead to productive discussions with conference participants in a poster session, including figures exemplifying the visual support to be provided for these discussions in the poster.

Symposia - 6 pages + 2 pages for references. DEADLINE Nov. 17, 2017
Symposia are for conveying larger ideas or results about a specific issue. Discussion among members of the symposium and with the audience should be moderated to focus on certain positions or controversies. It is not sufficient for a symposium to simply be a set of related papers, such as papers from a specific research group. Rather, symposia proposals should and will be evaluated on their capacity to address larger issues of interest to the ICLS community.

A clear description should be provided of:
   The overall focus of the symposium
   The major issues addressed or overarching/integrative points illustrated by the collective work
   How the collective presentations contribute towards the issues or points raised
   The significance of the contributions
   Separate, brief descriptions of the content of each presentation should be included in the 8-page submission

Crossover papers are designed to appeal to the combined audiences of the London Festival of Learning 2018, and will be presented on the Festival day of 27 June, 2018 to a large audience. Papers should appeal to the interests of the three communities that comprise the festival of Learning; ICLS, AIEd and Learning at Scale. The guidelines for submission are as for the standard long and short papers.

Pre-Conference Workshops & Tutorials 

4 pages+ 1 page for references DEADLINE Dec. 15, 2017

The ICLS 2018 Pre-Conference Workshops and Tutorials Committee invites submissions of proposals for Pre-Conference Events. Full-day workshops will be scheduled on Saturday June 23rd, and half-day workshops on Sunday June 24th. The main conference program will begin on the afternoon of Sunday June 24th. Pre-conference events should cohere with the conference theme, Rethinking Learning in the Digital Age: Making the Learning Sciences Count, and be organized as a workshop or a tutorial. Specifically,
   Workshops should be designed as collaborative knowledge-building sessions on a focused issue, where participants actively work together (e.g., analyzing data, discussing design criteria, collaborating on a research project). Substantial time should be allocated for interaction between participants. The presentation of a set of related papers (e.g., a symposium) is not considered a workshop.
   Tutorials should be designed as collaborative learning experiences for novices on a topic, technology, or methodology within ICLS, that are facilitated by experts. Tutorials should stimulate active participation and interaction between participants as well. Innovative format submissions are encouraged, provided they are within the scope of a workshop or tutorial.

 Submission Instructions

   Proposals for full or half-day events should be written in English.
   The proposal for the tutorial or workshop enables the pre-conference co-chairs to evaluate not only the content of the event, but also the organization of the event. The description should be written with the pre-conference co-chairs as the intended audience, telling us about practical issues that enables us to evaluate the proposal. The descriptions should not exceed 4 pages (plus 1 page for references), and should include:
   Workshop Title
   Proposers/Organizers’ names, affiliations, contact information, and backgrounds, including prior experience in conducting such events
   Intended audience
   Duration of event (half day or full day)
   Description of the event that includes: 

                      Theme and goals 

                      Theoretical background and relevance to field and conference 

                      Expected outcomes and contributions

   Participation requirements (how tutorial or workshop participants will be chosen)
   Relationship to similar events conducted in the past (e.g., at ICLS or CSCL), if any
   Facilities and equipment required (Please be specific if you feel you will require anything beyond a normal projector provided at typical conference)
   Minimal and maximal number of participants expected 
   A description of how you will solicit participation including a draft call for participation that will be posted by organizers on the ICLS 2018 website if the event is accepted

Proposal Selection Process

Proposals will be reviewed by the pre-conference co-chairs. Proposals may also be reviewed by additional judges at the discretion of the co-chairs.

   If two proposals are found to be very similar, organizers will be asked to consider whether to merge the proposals, to coordinate with morning and afternoon sessions, or to justify the viability of running the events in conflict with each other.

   We expect to send out acceptance notifications during January 2018.

   Organizers will be responsible for soliciting and selecting participants through the use of the conference website. To help support this work, selected organizers will be asked to create a one-minute video describing their workshop and why people would want to attend. More information on this process will be provided when proposals are selected.

Doctoral Consortium, Early and Mid-Career Workshop

6 pages + 1 page for references DEADLINE Feb. 16, 2018

The ICLS 2018 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for advanced Ph.D. students to share their dissertation research with their peers and a panel of faculty serving as mentors. Participants will engage in collaborative inquiry and scholarly discourse to improve their dissertation work and to advance their understanding of the Learning Sciences. To benefit from the Doctoral Consortium Workshop, applicants should be advanced graduate students at a stage in their dissertation research where the participants and mentors may be of help in shaping and framing the research and analysis activities.

How to submit

Participants for the Doctoral Consortium will be selected by the academic quality of their proposal, relevance, and potential contribution to ICLS, a recommendation from their doctoral advisor, and their anticipated contribution to the workshop goals. The proposals will be reviewed by two international experts in the field. An effort will be made to keep the participating group small to encourage interaction and collaboration.

Each proposal should contain the following:

    A cover sheet with your name, the title of your research project/dissertation, advisor’s name (or thesis chair’s name, as appropriate), institution, email address, phone and fax numbers, and mailing address.

    A 1200-word summary of your research including tables, figures, and references using the format specified by the ICLS 2018 general submission guidelines for ICLS papers. The summary should include the following: (a) Goals of the research; (b) Background of the project; (c) Methodology; (d) Current status, preliminary results or results of pilot work; and (e) The particular issues/problems in your dissertation and ICLS research you would like to explore further in the discussion at the Workshop.

    A letter of recommendation from your dissertation supervisor/advisor. It should include an assessment of the current status of your work and an expected date for dissertation completion.

All the materials should be put in one file (MS Word, RTF, or PDF) and the 1200 word summary proposal, after it has been accepted, will be disseminated for sharing and interaction with other participants in preparation for the Workshop.

Industrial/Commercial papers and the Practitioner Track

6 pages + 1 page for references DEADLINE Feb. 1, 2018

The Industrial and Commercial papers track is targeted towards practitioners and professionals working in the field of ICLS. We seek proposals that show the application, commercial aspects or practical challenges in any of the areas relevant to the learning sciences and in particular to the conference theme of Rethinking Learning in the Digital Age: Making the Learning Sciences Count/

All submissions will be reviewed by peers from industry and academia. The focus in review will be on general interest for the audience and how well the presentation enlightens industry realities, rather than strict academic criteria. All submissions will remain confidential during the review process.

Accepted proposals will be included in the ACM Digital Library as part of the Proceedings. The authors will have the opportunity to present their work during the conference during dedicated industry and commercial paper sessions. Upon acceptance, you have to present your work at the conference. At least one author of each proposal must register by the early registration deadline. 

In a similar vein we are also seeking Practitioner papers to recognize that a great deal of innovative work is concerned with applying theory to practice. Projects that are applied in real educational settings provide important contributions and perspectives on the opportunities associated with large implementation projects. The inclusion of a practice track in the conference will recognize the importance of applying theories and methods from the learning sciences in areas that seek to increase equity and access for all. Papers submitted to the track will be peer-reviewed like others but judged with a different set of criteria focusing on contributions to practice. For example, the paper’s ability to explain the challenges and opportunities associated with a project’s implementation might be one criterion to consider. The paper’s connection to the main conference theme and how it demonstrates a commitment to equity and access will also be considered.

Finally, the inclusion of a practice track is to recognize that there cannot be equity and access without practice. We hope to acknowledge and celebrate the work of practitioners that are doing cutting edge work that applies Learning Sciences research to interesting problems in education. As with all aspects of the conference, we will work closely with international colleagues to ensure that there a diverse range of papers are solicited and selected for the final program.
