City Information

Madison gives you the feeling of being in a small city with all the benefits of a pedestrian-scale urban environment. There is abundant public transportation, including free “circulator” buses throughout the campus. The downtown area, an easy walk from campus, provides a vast array of dining options and price ranges, including outdoor cafés and waterfront options and restaurants that offer cuisines from all around the world, local and organic produce from the heartland of the United States, artisan-crafted cheeses, and multiple, award-winning brew pubs. Summer in Madison is beautiful, mild, and rich in its offerings of outdoor activities. The lakes and parks in the city, within easy reach of the campus, provide many opportunities for outdoor recreation, including swimming, sailing, kayaking and canoeing. Further, the surrounding areas are well known for their art (e.g., outdoor plays and jazz, classical and pop-music concerts, outdoor craft fairs) and, of course, are home to one of the premiere American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, with buildings that attract visitors from around the world.

If you're not quite up to walking down State Street or up Bascom Hill there are other modes of transportation to get you where you need. Madison Metro Bus System travels throughout downtown Madison including routes to and from the UW campus area to the Capitol. Biking is also a very popular mode of transportation and Madison offers bicycle rental stations, several shops that rent bicycles, and extensive bike trails within the city and into surrounding areas.
