Time

Hong Kong is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+8).

Currency

The official currency is Hong Kong dollar (HK$), which is linked to the US dollar at a rate of about 7.80 HKD to 1 USD. Major credit cards are widely accepted, although cash is preferred in small shops.

Banks

Branches are open between 09:00 - 16:30 during weekdays and between 09:00 - 13:00 on Saturdays. Post Office Post offices are open from 07:30-14:00 hours (Monday-Friday).

There are a branch of HSBC at G/F, Run Run Shaw Building and a branch of the Bank of East Asia at Rm203, 2/F, Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Centre

Post office

Post offices are open between 09:30 - 17:00 during weekdays and between 09:30 - 13:00 on Saturdays. The post office nearest to The University of Hong Kong is Sai Ying Pun Post Office.

There is a mail box outside LG2, Knowles Building in the campus.

Shopping

Every day is a shopping day in Hong Kong. Shops are open from around 11:00-21:00. Malls are even open until 22:00. Hong Kong does not levy value-added tax (VAT), goods and services tax (GST) or sales tax.

Tipping

A 10% service charge is applied at most hotels and restaurants, but in most cases bosses pocket the service charge instead of the staff. Customers can pay an additional 5% tips as added incentive for hardworking staff. If no service charge for the restaurant, customary gratuity should be around 10%.

Smoking

Statutory no smoking areas include public transport facilities (including bus and taxi stops), indoor seatings of restaurants and bars, indoor areas of department stores and shopping malls, hospitals and universities, etc. Therefore, the conference is a non-smoking event.

Liability & Insurance

The organizers cannot be held responsible for accidents to conference participants or accompanying persons, for damage, or loss of their personal property, or for cancellation expenses, regardless of cause. Participants are advised to carry out their own insurance arrangements during their stay in Hong Kong.

Special Needs

Most buildings at The University of Hong Kong are equipped with ramped entrances, lift adapted for wheelchair users, toilets for users with a disability. Delegates and accompanying persons with disabilities are invited to advise the Conference Secretariat of any special requirements.

Phones

The international dialing code of Hong Kong is +852. Mobile operators provide GSM frequencies of 900 Mhz, 1800 Mhz and also 3G 2100. Please ensure that you are carrying a mobile phone compatible with those frequencies and also consult your cell provider about roaming rates for Hong Kong.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi service is available at Hong Kong International Airport. There is also Free GovWiFi service is in some government buildings including some public libraries. Via PCCW's Wi-Fi hotsports all around Hong Kong, visitors can unlimitedly browse Discover Hong Kong website and download tourist guides.

Conference participants can free access the internet on campus by connecting to the Wi-Fi netowork HKUGuests during the conference period.
