Who Should Submit
The ICLS 2006 Junior Researcher Consortium provides an opportunity for junior researchers (or equivalent if not in academic positions) to participate in a series of three workshops. Each of these workshops will be half-day and focused on topics of interest to the learning sciences. Workshop one will be targeted on building theory from data. Workshop two will be focused on scaling curriculum to have broad impact. Workshop three will focus on the use of assessment to demonstrate broad impact.

Selection of Consortium Submitters
The National Science Foundation (grant # 0548171) has provided support for twenty participants for the Junior Researcher Consortium. These individuals will be selected on the basis of their anticipated contribution to the workshop goals. Emphasis will be placed on forming a diverse group of high quality participants.

Consortium Objectives

  • To develop research skills related to building theory from data, to understanding challenges in scaling curriculum, and to use assessment strategies to demonstrate broad impact; and
  • To contribute to the conference experience of participants through interaction with other junior researchers and key Learning Sciences faculty.

Scaling Curriculum to have Broad Impact.

  • Janet Kolodner, Professor of Computing and Cognitive Science, Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Joseph Krajcik, Professor of Science Education, University of Michigan.

 Scaling Assessment to Demonstrate Impact.

  • Finbarr Sloane, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, Arizona State University
  • James Pellegrino,  Distinguished Professor in Psychology and Education, University of Illinois, Chicago

Scheduling of Consortium during Conference
The Junior Researcher Consortium will be conducted in a workshop format, held during the day-and-a-half prior to the start of the ICLS conference (Tuesday, June 27th and Wednesday morning, June 28, 2006).

Junior Researcher Consortium Application
Funding is available for 20 junior researchers members (or equivalent if not in academic positions), including a $500 stipend that can be used for travel and lodging. Registration fees will also be waived. To apply, please submit the following materials to :

  • A cover sheet with your name, date of degree completion, your institution, your title, your full postal address, phone numbers, and e-mail address (this is very important).
  • A 2-4 page summary of the focus of your work, including why you would like to attend the workshop.

These materials should be in one file (word or pdf).
