Position Purpose: The Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts and Science at the University of Illinois Chicago invites applicants for a Bridge to Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate. The Bridge to the Faculty (B2F) Post-Doctoral Scholars Program is a University-level initiative designed to increase faculty diversity at UIC. The program seeks to enhance diversity by encouraging the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars from different backgrounds, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented. The B2F scholars program is designed to be a two-year position. After the first year, and subject to satisfactory performance and University approval, this position may be re-appointed for a second year. A successful post-doctoral scholar in the Bridge to the Faculty program may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC after the conclusion of this post-doctoral position.
The Department of Psychology faculty along with interdisciplinary collaborators at UIC have an established record of providing excellent mentorship in post-doctoral training, who will provide the primary mentored support for this position. In addition, selected scholars will participate in a cohort mentoring experience through the Office of The Vice Chancellor of Diversity, Equity, and Engagement.
Position Expectations: The primary expectation for the postdoctoral scholar will be to begin a program of research.
The post-doctoral scholar will work with department leadership to identify one or more research mentors within Psychology and collaborating institutes (e.g., Institute for Juvenile Research, Institute for Health Research and Policy) who will support the candidate’s research and professional development goals. With support from their mentorship team, the post-doctoral will develop a 3 to 5-year research plan.
Each year the postdoctoral scholar will be expected to: submit a manuscript for publication; submit at least one proposal for presentation at relevant professional conferences; research and identify an extramural funding opportunity. In the second year of the postdoctoral position the scholar will be expected to develop a draft of the extramural funding application in consultation with their mentorship team and the Psychology Department grant administrator.
The post-doctoral scholar will not have teaching demands. However, in an effort to develop their teaching skills, we will ask the scholar to observe master teachers. The post-doctoral scholar will give one guest lecture per academic year to gain valuable teaching experience. In addition, the post-doctoral scholar will be asked to attend teacher-training workshops held by UIC’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence
The post-doctoral scholar will have access to institutional and departmental initiatives specifically designed to support their success. This unique post-doctoral position provides a structured opportunity to be mentored while building a successful teaching portfolio and a program of research with access to individualized supports for academic productivity. No departmental or College service will be required in the postdoc years.
The position will begin on August 16th, 2022.
Competitive Candidates: Qualified candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Psychology or a closely related field no earlier than August 16, 2018 and no later than August 16, 2022. We are particularly interested in candidates with degrees in Clinical and/or Community Psychology, whose research interests can span the department’s Clinical and Community Prevention Research programs, and whose work recognizes the importance of attending to race and the structures that create, maintain, and conversely challenge, race-based systems of power. Relevant areas of research include (but are not limited to) health promotion and intervention; dissemination and implementation science; and/or health equity. Applicants with strong qualitative and/or mixed methods research skills are encouraged to apply. Highly qualified candidates will have a record of (or demonstrated potential for) academic publication, experience working on grant-funded projects and a commitment to obtaining external funding for research, and some experience (or demonstrated potential for) teaching at the graduate level. The candidate will have the desire and skills to engage with a diverse student body, excellent communication skills, effective collaborative skills and a commitment to promoting educational equity and social justice.
