The Opportunity:

A newly-established research group focusing on learning sciences and technology research at Saarland University / Saarland Informatics Campus, chaired by Prof. Tomo Nagashima, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher (for about 2 years or more) or PhD student (3 years) to join his growing group. This position will conduct self-directed research projects in one or more of the areas below:

  • Designing for and supporting self-regulated learning and informed choice-making using AI-based learning technologies (e.g., Intelligent Tutoring Systems)
  • Using emerging technologies to design and develop engaging learning activities (e.g., educational games) in elementary and secondary mathematics
  • Applying learning analytics approaches to investigate cognitive and other aspects of human learning
  • Co-designing innovative learning activities, strategies, and technologies with students in primary and secondary schools, school teachers, and parents

The focus and details of research projects will be discussed and determined after employment, based on the candidate’s qualifications and interests. It is possible and encouraged to pursue original research ideas in related areas and there is a lot of flexibility in research topics. Collaborations with other research groups are also possible, encouraged, and supported.

This position comes with 4 hours of teaching load per week (which includes mentoring master’s and bachelor’s students). All research activities within the university will be conducted in English. Knowledge of the German language would be useful, but not required. The start date is flexible; we are happy to discuss and set a start date that works best for the candidate. Salary will be paid in accordance with the German TV-L salary scale, E13 (before tax approx. 4188€/month). For a postdoc, higher salary is possible, based on the candidate’s qualifications and previous experiences.

 

Job requirements and responsibilities:

  • Design and develop learning technologies and learning activities using participatory design approaches with stakeholders (school teachers, students, and parents)
  • Plan and conduct user studies with students, teachers, and parents
  • Plan and conduct classroom-based experiments with teachers and students
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data on student learning, perception, engagement, and emotion
  • Write scientific papers for conferences and/or journals and present findings to a wider range of audience
  • Mentor undergraduate and master’s student assistants in the lab and optionally teach a small seminar course 

 

Your academic qualifications:

  • For the Postdoc position: Completed a doctoral degree in one of the following fields or in a related field: Computer Science, Learning Sciences, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Education Science, and Cognitive Science
  • For the PhD position: Completed a master’s degree in one of the following fields or in a related field: Computer Science, Learning Sciences, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Education Science, and Cognitive Science
  • For both positions: Have skills in one or more of the following areas: software development (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript), HCI design and research (e.g., participatory design, user research), experimental design and statistical analyses of quantitative data, learning design, data mining, and learning analytics

 

The successful candidate will also be expected to have:

  • Advanced software development skills and experiences
  • Teaching experiences or experience working with school-aged students
  • Participatory design research experiences with education stakeholders
  • Prior conference or journal publications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Basic German skills (very optional, but nice to have)
