The School of Education at the University of California, Irvine is carrying out a search for a faculty member in the area of qualitative methods, with a focus on race and ethnicity. We are interested in candidates who use any of a broad set of qualitative methods, including but not limited to approaches such as case studies, conversational analysis, discourse analysis, ethnography, historical/archival research and/or other analyses within a broad range of disciplines, including but not limited to sociology, anthropology, and history, to improve educational outcomes and reduce gaps in educational equity. We welcome applicants who focus on teaching, learning, education policy, or broader applications of qualitative methods in educational environments, including schools, higher education, out-of-school settings, homes, and other community settings.

The ideal candidate will build and create a hub of qualitative expertise within the UCI School of Education, training a new generation of qualitative researchers interested in the intersections of race, ethnicity, and education. To support this work, the School of Education provides multiple resources for faculty and students to conduct qualitative research in collaboration and partnership with the racially and economically diverse schools and communities surrounding the UCI campus, including UCI’s Center for Research on Teacher Development and Professional Practice, Orange County Education Advancement Initiative (OCEAN), and Teacher Academy. As a faculty member, responsibilities will include teaching graduate level and undergraduate level courses, including both prospective researchers and teacher candidates. The faculty member will support doctoral students and doctoral research in related fields.

We are interested in candidates who demonstrate substantial evidence of a creative and productive program of research, impact on the field, and a record of excellence in teaching. The School is particularly interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, leadership roles, and public engagement.

We welcome applications at the Associate or Full Professor level. Applicants should have a PhD or EdD and a record of scholarship, teaching and mentorship, and service commensurate to the level at which they are applying.

The University of California, Irvine is Hispanic- and Asian-American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution that is consistently ranked as the top university in the country providing opportunity to low-income learners. UCI is located in Orange County, a highly diverse community with more than 25 colleges, ten of which are part of the California State University or California Community College systems.

The University of California, Irvine is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer advancing inclusive excellence. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, or other protected categories covered by the UC nondiscrimination policy. A recipient of an NSF ADVANCE Award for gender equity, UCI is responsive to the needs of dual career couples, supports work-life balance through an array of family-friendly policies, and is dedicated to broadening participation in higher education.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidates’ finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full).  The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct.  To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.
