Great Minds Think ILLINOIS

The College of Education’s mission extends far beyond the classroom: we aim to impact people’s lives locally, nationally, and globally. Our world-class faculty and students lead scholarship on critical issues in education and are committed to innovation and discovery. As a top-ranked institution, we develop and apply new pedagogies and practices that improve understanding—supporting traditional, blended, and online learning. The Education at Illinois community shares the ideals of respect for diverse ideas and social identities; dedication to community engagement; and the responsibility to make scholarship accessible and inclusive for all.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a land-grant, AAU, high research activity institution. The University provides strong support for research and opportunities for collaboration with leaders across campus and in the field.

Lead the Department of Curriculum & Instruction

We invite applications and nominations for a senior scholar to lead the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and build on our historical accomplishments and current initiatives related to community and public engagement. The leader will join us in reimagining our role as university actors, catalysts, and social change agents and taking action to build a more just, liberatory, and accountable institution and world. Depending on the alignment of scholarly work and qualifications, the department head position may be combined with a named professorship in Curriculum and Instruction.

The Department comprises 26 internationally and nationally recognized tenure-track and specialized faculty from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds who are committed to seeking deep interconnections among theory, research, and practice. Research anchors our work at the graduate level, with our intellectual contributions organized into four program areas: 1) Curriculum Research, Early Childhood Education, Aesthetics, and Teacher Education (CREATE); 2) Digital Environments for Learning, Teaching & Agency (DELTA); 3) Language and Literacy (L&L); and 4) Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (MSE). At the undergraduate level, we focus on global and local concerns of pre- and in-service teacher learning, early childhood, elementary, and secondary education, and our faculty contribute significantly to the College’s licensure and non-licensure degree programs.

The College of Education provides strong support for research through the Bureau of Educational Research, and opportunities abound for collaboration within the College as well as campuswide, focused on both school- and community-based learning settings. Faculty in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction are funded by the National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, and the U. S. Department of Education, among other external agencies and prestigious foundations.

The Department Head has the administrative support of an associate head for graduate programs, program area chairs, and an administrative assistant, and works collaboratively with the College executive leadership team.

Minimum Qualifications: We seek a nationally known scholar with effective leadership qualities who will support a strong and diverse faculty and continue to recruit and retain diverse students. The Head must possess an earned doctorate in education or a related field and demonstrate a strong record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with the position of full professor. Candidates also must have a record of promoting diversity, equity, access, and inclusion within one or more areas of their research, teaching, public engagement, or service.

Preferred Qualifications:  Evidence of previous administrative experience in higher education and budget oversight is strongly preferred, as is a strong record of acquiring external funding, an understanding of the complexities of P-12 education and teacher education, a commitment to community engagement and building inclusive relationships, and experience with faculty and program development.

Salary and Starting Date: The budgeted base salary range for the position is $120,000 to $150,000 at the Full Professor level, for a nine-month service basis. As the head of the department, an administrative stipend will be added for a twelve-month service basis. Additional resources are provided for named professors. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years in rank, training, and field or discipline; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs.  The proposed starting date is August 16, 2025.

Confidential inquiries about the position may be directed to Professor Kim Graber, [email protected].  For questions regarding the application process, please contact 217-333-2137.
