Job Description
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Research Associate and Application Developer, Office of Learning Analytics, College of Education [R0144539].
ROLE of the POSITION
The role of this position is to provide leadership in the Office of Learning Analytics for scaling learning analytics tools and data visualizations to support student online instruction and learning analytics research. Leveraging analytics, the Research Associate will develop a learning analytics external tool for Canvas that can integrate iTOOLS, a UNLV learning analytics online student support system, into all online classes at UNLV. The Research Associate will assist with ongoing application development, database processing, as well as data cleaning, coding, and analysis for research. The Research Associate should be generally skilled in programming languages, web application development, and data security.
The Research Associate will develop and maintain an external learning analytics application for Canvas using Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) framework, including creating end-to-end web application solutions, meeting the LTI standards, assisting with deployment and hosting, and carrying out unit testing. The application will be used to support student learning and conduct learning analytics research. The Research Associate will provide database support including querying and updating to various data sources on campus for, as well as building database procedures to prepare data for the Canvas external tool. The research associate will attend weekly team meetings, support the current iTOOLS application development with ongoing efforts, and prepare data for use in research reports and publications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The Research Associate must possess a Master’s degree in computer science or some related technical field such as learning sciences, human-computer interaction, or machine learning and have experience with web application development and data security.
The Research Associate must have successfully completed advanced course work or 2 years job experience in computer science related field related to web application development.
The Research Associate must be familiar with programming languages such as JavaScript, PHP, HTML, CSS, AJAX for web application development, as well as Python, Ruby, Node.js proficiency for server requests.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Research Associate may have a PhD in computer science or some related technical field.
The Research Associate will have demonstrated ability to develop an external tool for learning management system with knowledge directly related to Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI).
Familiarity and Canvas API for data extraction and the LTI standard to authenticate Canvas and pass data between the application and the Canvas system. Experience using Git for version control and debugging.
